I was completely alone on the battlefield. The field was shot up and cratered. It was nighttime.
Bombs were whistling in the distance. I could hear muffled explosions.
I crawled on my belly, elbows and knees. I may have had a rifle and I may have had a helmet. It was very hard to crawl. I couldn't see anyone else, neither alive nor dead.
Suddenly, I heard a piercing whistle. I got up to run because I knew it was a mortar shell that was coming at me. The mortar struck the ground. I was blown off the ground. Never had I heard something so loud before. It was louder than any gunshot. The sound was so immense that I felt it more than heard it.
I could feel myself flying through the air and falling hard against the dirt. Clods of earth came tumbling down - I could feel those hitting my back and my legs and my head.
Immediately, I got up to run again. I was in a full panic now, because the bombs were extremely close. I was running. Another bomb fell and exploded. This time I was blown off my feet and to the side. I could feel the blast against my face.
I looked up. I knew I couldn't run from the next blast. I couldn't run anymore. My heart was racing, and I could feel my pulse in my throat.
Another bomb fell out of the sky. I closed my eyes, surrendered and let go.
I thought, "Out."
